Are You Covered in the Event of a Surfing Injury?

Saturday, September 15th, 2012

Knowing the terms and conditions of your Payment Protection Insurance PPI is very important and the buyer should read and make sure they understand all of the exclusions which may affect any future claims.  Payment Protection Insurance is designed to take over major financial payments in case the owner suffers a job or income loss through no fault of their own, is involved in an accident or suffer an illness.  Someone who engages in a conceivably dangerous sport or has a job with a high potential for injury can obtain coverage, but may pay a higher premium.  For this reason you will want to make sure that the coverage you elect does not exclude these activities.  Often the buyer is issued a blanket policy without any assessment being given to their particular needs.  This practice is referred to as mis-selling, the policy holder does not realize that they will be unsuccessful in filing a claim because the policy terms are not applicable to their situation.  If the company selling the coverage does look at the customer and ascertain their individual needs they may decline the coverage and the customer can look elsewhere for a policy that would work for them.

Perceptions Do Matter

Surfers need to be cognizant of the potential for securing a Payment Protection Plan that excludes accidents caused during their pursuit of the big wave.  Perhaps working with agents who insure in high volume surf communities will result in good and applicable coverage.  People who consider surfing to be dangerous and risky would not understand your passion for this sport.  One thing that you as the surfer could do is to follow safety rules and use common sense when enjoying the sport.  Your chances of sustaining an injury can be minimized when you don’t take unnecessary risk.

Surfing or Snowboarding?

Saturday, June 16th, 2012

When it comes to balance, many people don’t have the ability to surf or snowboard. Even to those that have an overabundance of balance, it is not always the easiest task to learn either one. When deciding which of these sports to pursue, it is first important to consider all of the variables.

WHAT IS BEST FOR YOU

Obviously, where you live will have an impact on which sport you lean towards. If you live in, say, Montana, chances are you aren’t going to want to trek across the country just to learn how to surf. Of course, many inland states have establishments that have strived to replicate a watery environment suitable for surfing, but that is just not the same. In addition to the place you live and how far it would be to participate in these activities, you also have to consider the costs involved. Not only do you have to get the actual boards, you have to consider any accessories that you may need as well as clothing that will be adequate for the activity you choose. Most towns and cities that are known for these activities also have plenty of places to rent the equipment, if you so choose. For example, in San Diego you can find a surfboard rental shop on pretty much every corner near the beaches. In Beaver Creek rentals of snowboards are offered in plenty of ski shops. However, it is very unlikely that you will immediately master these activities and rentals add up.

SOFT LANDING

Another factor to consider is the fact that while learning to either snowboard or surf, you are going to fall. There is always the possibility that you will be a natural but chances are that gravity will win a few battles before you win the war. You have to decide which you feel is a softer landing when that inevitable collision with gravity transpires. If you took fifty people and put them in a room together and asked which hurt less, snow or water, you would likely find yourself in a split room. Pain is very personal and the fact that someone insists the snow is softer won’t fix your broken arm. You have to decide which fall is least likely to cause you injury.

No matter which you choose, remember to have fun! Really, that is what it is all about.

Surfing Healthy

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2012

Surfing is awesome, and it is a great sport, and is enjoyed all around the world. People in Hawaii, where the sport originated, flock to the ocean in droves to catch a wave.  Surfers also enjoy riding the waves in Australia or California. It is growing in popularity among people of all ages and are enjoying many health benefits from it as well. Surfing has cardiovascular benefits from all the paddling, and this is also helping to strengthen the shoulders and back. The legs and core are engaged so they can hold you up on the board, so these get strong, lean, and healthy-looking as well. People who love to surf get in really good shape, and this just makes surfing even more enjoyable. But people with the condition fibromyalgia might need to be very careful before they paddle out to catch a wave because of the widespread muscle pain that is associated with the disorder.

Surfing And Fibromyalgia

Anyone who wants to go surfing should learn more about their fibromyalgia disorder and how they can manage it while they are out in the water. It should be easily managed with a prescription, but they should at least ask their doctor about taking on a new sport like surfing before they head out to the beach. Fibromyalgia information is also available online, so some surfing should be done on the internet before they go surfing in the ocean.  The muscle pain can really inhibit someone from being able to engage their muscles properly, which will make it hard to paddle out and stand on the board. Someone who wants to go surfing should probably build some muscle strength on land with weights or in a pool, using methods that engage the muscles, but are slowly and gently building muscles and getting the body used to using these muscles.

Once the body is used to movements like paddling in water and there is a level of leg and core strength built up, then a fibromyalgia sufferer can enjoy surfing, while taking a painkiller for their widespread muscle pain.

Also, the Go Pro Surf Cam is another cool gift idea from the Go Pro line of cameras, that fuses to the front of a surfboard and allows the surfer to record themselves. They also sell other mounting accessories, like a wrist mount. Other equipment to consider when buying a gift for a surfer are neoprene hoods (to prevent Surfer’s Ear), surfboard racks for bicycles, surfboard ding repair kits, surfboard fins or Indoboards (a surfer cross trainer that helps improve balance and strength).

Otherwise think media

And if you want to buy your surfer something they’ll enjoy when they’re not in the water, anything media-wise is also a great idea.  A magazine subscription to either The Surfer’s Journal, Surfer Magazine or Wend Magazine will surely make any diehard surfer pleased.  And there are loads of surfing-inspired books to also check out: “Saltwater Buddha” by Jalmal Yogis, “In Search of Captain Zero” by Allan Welsbecker, “Caught Inside” by Daniel Duane and “The California Surf Project” by Eric Soderquist and Chris Burkard. Also, fitness dvds with a surfing slant are another great idea. “Surfing into Yoga with Rochelle Ballard” and “Surf Exercises with Taylor Knox” are a few popular ideas.

While on your hunt for the perfect surfer gift, whether you’re buying gifts for your kids or gifts for husband, always remember to think outside the box, just like how so many surfers already do.

Planning a Surfer Themed Fundraiser?

Saturday, May 7th, 2011

Fundraising can be great fun and help many in need. A surfer themed fundraising website can be especially fun but planning for it must be detailed and organized. To ensure that your surfer themed fundraiser is effective and great fun, think first about the invitation. You can choose from such patterns and titles as: Beach Resort: Surf, Seaside Palms, Bright Boards: Light Turquoise or Birthday Surfari: Khaki.

How about Sending out Celebrate Cards?

You can also send out Let’s Celebrate Cards, Reply Cards or a Welcome Letter for Out of Towners with this kind of event. You will also need to buy some surf party table linens. There are many options to choose from. If your budget is limited, try a classic solid linen such as a cream linen or complimentary white linen. If you are hosting a surfing them party in your home, most color schemes will work. Always plan your table décor around your linen colors. Place mats can also work and give a creative and fun look. You can also use place mats as place cards by making a page for each guest. Keep in mind, too, your place card table buffet tables, your gift table and other tables when deciding on your linen count.

Centerpieces are a Must!

For centerpieces that can make this event stand out, think about pouring sand in the middle of table. Then, place a palm tree on the sand—a little bit off center and a sculpture in the center. Tropical flower arrangements add beauty and charm to surfer themed fundraisers. You can have fun and add color and zest to this kind of event by choosing a different sculpture for every table. Once the party is over, you can give to special friends or family, certain figures or donate them to charitable organizations.

Change In Store For ASP

Friday, December 4th, 2009

The ASP World Tour may experience a few changes in the near future. Held recently on the Gold Coast, a summit of ASP “stakeholders” discussed a single tier ranking system that would open WT events to WQS surfers.

In the past, surfers have had to compete and rank high on the qualifying tour to be able to compete on the Championship Tour the following year. The trouble for surfers not in the top ranks of the WT is that they will have to qualify for the tour again next year. Essentially, all but the absolute top surfers have to surf the WQS and the WT simultaneously.

Other significant happenings at the summit involved a “substantial” increase in WT prize money and a declaration of loyalty to the WT by event franchisees. There is a proposed new super-tour threatening the long-standing and prestigious WT. The summit sent a clear message that the surf industry will not back the super-tour and the promoters will need to elsewhere for support and money.

The ASP also discussed the problem with inconsistent Internet coverage of events. There is no uniform way of distributing video of the events, especially live feeds from multiple sources. The ASP would like to develop a plan to bring continuity and valid information the fans around the world that tune into the Internet for live event coverage.

The ASP is facing an exciting time with so much happening. They know they have a supportive fan and sponsor base, and now can work on improving the competition. The surfers and event reps that make up the ASP governing body will vote on the changes presented at the summit in October.
